Division Play

overview

Division Play is Gotham’s organized league play program. Gotham offers two 10-week seasons in the Fall and Spring each year. There are a total of 12 divisions, covering players at nearly all skill levels. The season typically concludes with an additional one-day End of Season Tournament, followed by a Gotham-wide End of Season Party at a later date.

Community-building and friendly competition are at the core of Division Play. Socializing on and off the court is an important part of the appeal of Division Play for many of our players. The entire league, and individual Divisions and teams will hold social events throughout the season to support this.

How to join:

All Gotham Division Players sign up as individuals every season, and teams are formed by captains using a draft system. Captains are elected from the pool of players who participated in the most recent prior season. These captains observe prospective players at a tryout session before drafting teams of 8-10 players, taking into account which position(s) those players want to play and are able to play at the level of that Division. Many players, including all those who are new to Gotham Division Play, must attend tryouts in order to participate in Division Play. Use the tables below to determine which division(s) to try out for.

Information on registration and tryout dates can be found shortly before the beginning of each season on the Upcoming Season page and in our Newsletter (subscribe at the bottom of the website!).

Season and game format:

Each Division plays on a consistent schedule, with all games occuring within a three to four hour window on the same day each week. Some Divisions play at the same gym for all ten weeks, while others rotate among different gyms. Currently, all gyms for Division play are located in Chelsea and Hell's Kitchen. Occasionally, teams will have a bye week or, rarely, alternate scheduling depending on gym availability.

Teams face off against every other team in the Division at least once during the season, at a varying time each week. For half the weeks of the season, a team is also required to arrive early or stay late to scorekeep and assist the 1st referee with other refereeing duties.

All players who attend a game each week are given approximately equal play time. Because rosters are limited to 8-10 players per team, it's important that players register for divisions whose play schedule aligns with their availability.

View the table below for level and schedule information for each Division. Typically, the Spring season runs from February through May (with tryouts starting in January), and the Fall season runs from September through December (with tryouts starting in August).

Skill levels:

By virtue of the draft system, which occurs in order by division starting with Division 1, the average skill level is most advanced in Division 1 and least advanced in Division 12. Use the two tables below to determine which Division may be most appropriate.
